14. The story within the story is the one told by Vera to Framton Nuttel. It is a story about an accident that had happened to the three man of the house. Veera's uncle, and her aunt's two brothers. The open window is a place through which they went out hunting but that particular outing turned out to be their last journey. This entire story is a cunning little plot what Veera made a play a prank on the mentally ill Framton. Its objective is to feel his anxiety. The entry of the so-called 'dead' character in the final scene makes Nuttel mad as he escapes, thinking there to be ghosts. The last line of the story tells us that Vera loves to make up stories with little clues. ("Romance at short notice was her speciality.") This is how the writer maintains that the story told by Vera is false.

The other story is the story of Framton who has a mental illness. As he gets advice from his sister, he leaves for the village to have some treatment. But, when he hears the story by Vera and happens to the so-called dead people with his bare eyes, he gets frightened as if he saw ghosts. Then, he runs away from the house leaving the impression of rude, uncivilized person.
