‘’Grandma! Grandma!!’’ yelled Dinesh. Pabitra looked around and said, ‘’I’m here kanchhu.’’Dinesh was perplexed when he saw his grandma packing so many bags. ‘’Where’re you going grandma? Pabitra looked at her eight years old grandson.’’ Your uncle’s house.’’ are you going for a long time there?’’ asked Dinesh. Pabitra didn’t reply but continued packing her things. At the moment his mother Junakiri arrived looking very stressed. ‘’Go to your room and check whether you have completed your homework. Don’t disturb grandma.’’ she said, staring at him. Dinesh went to his room. He was scared of his mother when she was in a serious mood. After an hour, she called a taxi and loaded it with her luggage. ‘’Where are you kanchhu? Come here. I’m leaving.’’ No sooner had he approached than she kissed and squeezed him tightly, put some money in his hand and got onto the taxi. ’’Grandma! When will you come back?’’ Dinesh shouted as she vanished into the crowded city in the taxi. His question remained unanswered. He turned to his father Jayaram and said. ‘’Daddy, stop her or let me go with her. Why hasn’t she taken me? When will she come back?’’ Jayaram held his hand, entered the room and said, ‘’She has gone to your uncle’s house. How could she take you with her? You should be anxious about your study and exam. I don’t know when she’ll come back.’’  Grandma loved him very much. He used to sleep in her lap playing with her gray hair and caressing her wrinkled face. She used to tell wonderful stories at his bed time. She was a good story teller. How could he forget her? In her absence, when his school had holidays, Dinesh mostly spent the day with Binita, a middle aged woman, who worked as a housekeeper for more than 20 years for his family. Her slim body with straight long hair, dimple on the right cheek; pointed nose and big black eyes; oval face with white skin and sweet, polite nature made her fascinating and loving too. Everyone in the family called her Naani. She used to take good care of him.

Dr KC ends 22-day fast after deal

Manish Gautam, Kathmandu Dec. 4

Dr. Govinda KC ends his tenth hunger strike on the 22nd day on Sunday morning after reaching a 12-point agreement with the government on Saturday night. Dr KC drank juice offered by two-and-a-half-year-old Marsaang Tamang, who lost his mother in the earthquake last year, to break his fast at TU Teaching Hospital. The orthopaedic surgeon was taken to the ICU ward of the hospital immediately after breaking the fast. He signed the agreement paper which he had agreed to on Saturday night. Weakened by the voluntary starvation, his health would be closely monitored for a few days before he is discharged.

‘’We are fighting to improve the quality of health education. I hope the government will not drag its feet again on implementing the agreements.’’ Said Dr KC, who briefly spoke after breaking his fast. He asserted that he would always be ready for protests if the government failed to live up to its commitment.

In his latest hunger strike, Dr KC pressed for an end to political meddling in universities and arbitrary appointments to key posts, including dean at the Tribhuvan University Institute of Medicine. As a result of Dr KC’s series of hunger strikes, MBBS fees have been set at Rs. 3.8 Million. In the poem ‘Past and Present’, the poet initially portrays his childhood and the house where he was born. Those beautiful days when the sun rays came peeping through his window in the morning are still vivid in his memory. In the second stanza, he remembers the days of his childhood when he used to see and feel the beautiful colours of roses his brother used to set the laburnum on his brother’s birthday.

The third and fourth stanzas show the contrasting experience of his past and present. He vividly remembers how he used to swing, enjoy the breeze and wind. In the same way, he was all energetic and high in spirit. But now, he does not have the energy to lift his spirit. The water in the pool was cool and pleasant but now it is not cool enough to cool his fever. Finally, he says how he used to think in the wildest manners about fir trees and their slender tops which could touch the sky. Now he misses the joy of his childhood and realizes that nothing is attainable.

One summer evening I was sitting by the open window, reading a good but rather frightening mystery story. After a time it became too dark for me to read easily, so I put my book down and got up to switch on the light. I was just about to draw the curtains as well when I heard a loud cry of ‘’Help! Help! ‘’ It seemed to come from the trees at the end of the garden. I looked out, but it was now too dark to see anything clearly. Almost immediately I heard the cry again. It sounded like a child, although I could not imagine how anybody could need help in our garden, unless one of the boys of the neighborhood had climbed a tree and could not get down.

I decided, however, that I ought to go out and have a look in the garden, just in case some was in trouble. I took the torch which we keep for going down into the cellar, where there is no electric light, and picked up a strong walking stick, thinking that this might come in use too. Armed with these, I went out into the garden. Once again I heard a cry. There was no doubt that it came from the trees at the end of the garden. ‘’ Who’s there? ’’ I called out as I walked, rather nervously, down the path that led to the trees. But there was no answer. With the help of my torch l examined the whole of the path of the garden and the lower branches of the trees. There was no sign of anybody or anything. I came to the conclusion that someone was playing a rather silly joke on me.

As it came near the corner, the taxi stopped suddenly. The driver got out looking very puzzled. A big lorry which had been following the taxi stopped too. The taxi driver was now standing at the corner looking up at the sky and the lorry driver went and joined him. A number of cars behind were forced to stop as well and soon a large crowd of people had gathered at the corner. The cause of all this trouble was a very strange noise. It sounded as if thousands and thousands of birds were singing together. The noise was quite frightening and many people looked disturbed. The most extraordinary thing was that, apart from one or two pigeons, there was no bird in sight. No one was able to solve the mystery until two policemen arrived. They noticed a large advertisement for a film high up on a wall nearby. As the noise seemed to be coming from the direction, they climbed up and found that a tape recorder had been hidden behind the advertisement. The noise made by the bird singing was being broadcast over powerful loudspeakers so as to attract the attention of passers-by. The police asked the advertisers to take the recorder away because the advertisement had attracted so much attention that it was impossible for a great many cars and buses to move freely in the street.

Cultivating a habit is like plowing a field. It takes time. Habits generate other habits. Inspiration is what gets us started, motivation is what keeps us on track, and habit is what is automatic. The ability to show courage in the face of adversity; show self-restraint in the face of temptation, choose happiness in the face of hurt, show character in the face of despair, and see opportunity in the face of obstacles are all valuable traits to possess. But these traits do not just appear; they are the result of constant and consistent training, both mental and physical. In the face of adversity, our behavior, whether positive or negative can only be whatever have practiced. When we practise negative traits such as cowardice or dishonesty is small events, and hope to handle the major events in a positive way, it won’t happen because that’s not what we have practiced.
Honesty or dishonesty to self and others becomes a habit. The choice is ours as to what we practice. Whatever response we choose, our thinking pattern becomes habitual. We form habits, and habits form character. Before we realize that we have got the habit, the habit has got us.
Someone once said, ‘Our thoughts lead to actions, actions lead to habits, and habits form character.” Character leads to destiny. Therefore, you should try to form character building habits.
