The ultimate aim of all English teaching is for students is for students to ‘know English’, or at least know enough English for whatever purpose they have in learning the language. In this text we shall consider what knowing English entails – in other words, what are the aspects of the language that need to be learnt?

The question appears to be fairly straightforward. Clearly, students need to develop skills, e.g. speaking, listening, reading and writing; how much attention is paid to each skill will depend on the students’ need and interests. Within the productive skills (speaking and writing), we can say that students need to learn words and phrases to express meanings in English; they also need be able to produce basis structures correctly.  In speaking, this will involve learning the sound system and stress and intonation patterns; in writing, it will involve learning features of the writing system, such as spelling and punctuation. Since we don’t speak or write in isolated sentences, they will also need to learn ways of joining sentences together in connected speech or writing.

Within the receptive skills (listening and reading), we can say that students need to understand words and structures in their spoken and written forms, and also understand the connecting devices that link them together. (All of this says nothing, of course, about how students learn, and does not necessarily mean that all these items need to be individually taught.)

    A.    Give short answers to these questions.

      a. What is the final objective of all English teaching?

    c.     In speaking stress and intonation are not significant.
    d.     In listening and reading skills, we cannot say that students need to know words and structures in their spoken and written forms.
    e.      Students will also need to learn ways of joining sentences together in connected speech or writing.

One autumn, my sister and I made a blunder. She was ten and I was sixteen. We planned to really enjoy our holiday because we were together but away from home. Our excitement lasted till the end of our journey and taught us an important lesson.
We felt very excited and grown up as we were on the way to the hometown of our grandparents in a cart. Fresh and cool breeze touched our body and our soul. When we reached the lodge, we were disappointed. Although it was expensive, It was not clean and well furnished. It had a tin roof. The room where we were going to spend our night was small. I did not find it cozy. In spite of a small window that was facing towards the North, the room was not as airy as we expected. Both of us disliked it. We asked our granny ‘Is there any hotel? We like to stay somewhere else, but not here.” When we asked about another option, our grandfather replied, ‘No, there is not any guest house or hotel nearby.” Their reply annoyed us but we could not make any further request further. Human traffic is one of the cross-cutting issues. It is a worldwide serious concern. Human trafficking is an illegal trade of human beings for sexual exploitation, forced labour, extraction of organs or tissues and so on. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), human trafficking is the recruitment or transportation of persons by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of abduction, fraud or deception, or for the purpose of exploitation. It knows no gender, age, race and boundaries.
Victims are trafficked within a country or transnational. They are smuggled because they are forced to work as prostitutes, domestic servants, beggars, factory workers, mine workers, circus performers and child soldiers. It is like another form of slavery. The majority of trafficking victims are women and children because of their marginalization in many societies and their limited economic resources. Besides them, other key target groups include people from low income households, ethnic minorities, illiterate or people with low level of education, refugees, illegal migrants, children running away from home, and other. Members of split families are also prone to it. Women of forced marriage and early marriage, deserted wife, widows and discriminated daughters are easily victimized.

40,000 cancer patients in Nepal: Report
Bhaktapur,
Dec. 15 (RSS):

One per cent of the total population of the world has developed cancer, and in Nepal around 40,000 people are
found to be cancer positive, according to a WHO report. Every year another 15,000 cases are added and around
6,000 people die of the disease.

Disclosing this, a press meet organized by Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital also said most cancer patients can be
cured if diagnosed on time and treatment provided promptly. Have you developed symptoms such as difficulty in
swallowing, sores that do not heal for a long time, changes in your voice, excessive bleeding from the nose,
change in the colour and size of moles or constipation? If so it could indicate cancer.

Medical director of the hospital and senior cancer specialist Dr Madan Kumar Piya says that people are not
sufficiently cautious about cancer, the second most dangerous disease after HIV AIDS. Most cases are rushed to
hospital when it is too late for them to be saved even with full range of treatment. Cancer in Nepal mostly

39. Read the following passage and do the activities that follow.

All students are afraid of examinations as they are a stressful experience. But the examinations that I sat for last week were quite different. A week ago, I finished my Master’s first year examinations which were very terrible. The exam environment made me feel as if I was doing class work in my classroom. The exam centre was in one of the old and well reputed campuses in Kathmandu. Most of the examinees were mature people, and everyone carried their books, guides, solution papers, chits and mobiles into the exam hall. Moreover, no examinee was seated according to the assigned seating plan.

The exam results show that those who labour hard get lower marks and those who cram for the exams by making use of guess papers, solution papers, and guide books have been scoring higher marks. This practice has to be eliminated otherwise it will be a hindrance to educational progress.

I urge the concerned people to conduct examinations in a strict manner so that only hardworking and qualified candidates pass them. Otherwise, the overall education system of Nepal will worsen, and the number of students applying for higher studies abroad will swell rapidly. Many Nepali students do not want to earn a degree from Nepal’s universities. Unfortunately, our educationists and concerned authorities have been turning a blind eye to the malaise in the exam system. For instance, a couple of years ago there was an assessment system, so the maximum number of students got first division in the Master’s level. After the system was removed, very few students got first division.

There is injustice between two generations. There is tough competition for jobs. First division certificate holders have a high possibility of getting jobs in comparison to second division holders. Our market is certificate oriented, not quality based. Employers look at the percentage. They lay emphasis on the percentage scored in the Master’s level, but they never consider how the employees have obtained the marks. There are many students who have been victimised by such a system of conducting examinations. Unless and until the examination system is made more stringent, qualified manpower cannot be produced.

A.    Give short answers to these questions.
a.    How do students cram for their examinations?
b.    How should exams be conducted according to the writer?
c.    Why did only few students pass in the Master’s level?
d.    Who are likely to get jobs easily?
e.    What is focused on by the employers?

B.    Complete the following sentences with an appropriate word from the passage in each space.
a.    Only hardworking students can ______ exams if the conduction of the exam is changed.
b.    Most of the students don’t want to graduate from Nepal’s ______________.
c.    There is a fierce competition for __________
d.    __________ prevails between two generations.

C.    Write the antonyms of these words from the passage.
i. finished       ii. improve     iii. diminish    iv. phased in      v.  problem        vi. low

Most of the commercially produced vegetables available in the market are found to be unsafe for consumption, thanks to an excessive use of chemicals during their cultivation. ‘We are consuming poison along with vegetables, “scientist Ram Babu Paneru at Nepal Agricultural Research Council told this daily. “The farmers have been using pesticides and insecticides excessively in the farms, posing a threat to human health. Paneru said he recently visited vegetable farms in Charaudi and Mahadevsthan villages of Dhading, Empaphant and Baradi of Tanahun and Tutunga village of Kaski district. “Unprescribed use of chemicals is harmful to both the farmers and consumers,” he said. ‘It spoils the taste of vegetables and has environmental hazards.”

Climate Change is going to make inequality even worse than it already is
By Chelsea Harvey December 8, 2015

In a paper published on Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists demonstrate the full ramifications of a widely accepted theory about climate change: that it will almost certainly have a disproportionate impact on the poor. Acknowledging this fact in models they find can drastically change estimates of how climate change will affect the economy, and leads to a deeply troubling conclusion – climate change won’t just hit the poor hardest, but it will exacerbate existing inequality within societies. The lacking description of subregional/national inequality is one of the most glaring lacunae in these models,” said lead author Francis Denning, an assistant professor of economics at Yale – NUS College in Singapore, in an email to The Post.

About 2500 years ago in Egypt, the wise men of the country had a problem that they were unable to solve. They
wanted to know the height of a great pyramid. One man suggested that someone should  climb the  pyramid  and
measure it. Somebody should climb the pyramid and measure it. Someone tried to do so, but the pyramid was tall
and sloping slides were slippery. While these wise men were trying to figure out how to climb the structure,
somebody brought up other problems.
“We still won‟t know the actual height”, he said. “All that, the workman could measure, would be the length of the
slope.” Then somebody suggested consulting Thales, a Greek scientist, who was living in Egypt at the time.
“Here is the way to measure the height of the pyramid, he told them. “One of you must stand beside the pyramid in
