“Yogamaya had a two-prolonged agenda, not just one,” explained Manamaya. “Her first target was the cultural and religious oppression of the time. Her second object was our ruler, the Prime Minister, who along with his generals allowed corruption and inequality to prevail. Our master, Shakti Yogamaya, showed us how these two evil are intertwined, and she feared neither.”

Yogamaya launched a brilliant and daring political campaign from her base in the hills of East Nepal. It took place during the 1930s, and ended in 1940 with her death, along with sixty-eight of her followers who one by one followed her into the thundering current of the Arun River. After leading a campaign for reform and justice, Yogamaya finally confronted the ruler with an ultimatum: “If you do not grant us justice, we will die,” she declared. Juddha Samser responded by sending his army to round up the protesters.

The tragedy that resulted remains a stain on the government. The Nepalese authorities covered up the episode and banned all mention of her. Her campaign was thoroughly expunged from the nation’s historical record and almost lost to its political consciousness. But the powerful verses composed by Yogamaya, the hazurbani, survived.

“If you beat me up, my mum will kill you.” If you are a teacher, you may have already heard or are likely to hear an aforementioned remark. One of my colleagues once was astounded at the remark of a student in the class. I find myself in a sea of wonders and in a complete whirl. Are our students forgetting the real meaning of a school and a teacher? When I was back in a school, a school was understood to be a temple of learning and teaching and teachers to be a burning candle. Teachers were put at par with God. On the contrary, a school nowadays has been a dating spot for couples, a ring for quarrelsome pupils and a gossip venue for some teachers. Infatuation has been one of the rising issues, and discipline a thing of the past and lack of it has only increased the woes of the teachers as well as the school administration.

One of the underlying problems for the disciplinary problems is the defiant attitude the students have developed due to the backing of their parents. A parent coming to school to accuse and argue with the school staff is one of the most commonest happenings that can be seen in any school office. Often these accusations and arguments take an ugly turn and the school authorities confronted parents’ threats of calling the media to tarnish the institution’s image. So it is better to avoid confrontations being tolerant. Once upon a time, fear of corporal punishment was the only effective technique for discipline maintenance, but today the table has been turned. Now it is not students but teachers have to fear students.

All sorts of pressure are placed on the teachers and the school authorities to promote the student, and if you do not succumb to this pressure, you are subject to dire consequences. Today the student is very well aware of the fact s/he will not be meted out any forms of physical punishment. Teachers are obligated to abide by rules, whereas parents forget their responsibilities for their wards’ overall development.

Today the classrooms hold only ten percent of scholars. The balance ninety percent are only present in class because they have to be there. They are only existing and contributing to the category of unwilling learners. Parents should have a clear conscience that their blind belief and backing to their offspring is only bringing the axe down on their own feet.

While all these books are fairly new, it would be a great injustice to not mention V for Vendetta, a controversial graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, published 1980s. It is set in a future totalitarian England where the Norsefire party rules by instilling fear in its citizens. It is now a world of corrupt officials, oppression, concentration camps conspiracies and, last but not least, a vigilante called V in a Guy Fawkes mask. V is more than an anarchist fighting against tyranny—anonymous, he is an idea, a thought. He is every one of us who dares to fight against oppression, and a symbol of unity. The story has now become an inspiration and the Guy Fawkes mask a symbol of protest and revolt against corruption.

There are no mythical creatures or hostile alien species in these books. There are no perfect people either. There are only flawed humans, the merciless things they do to one another, their hubris and their hopes.

During my seven-year-long teaching career, I've dealt with students with different natures and talents, and
parents with varied attitudes and ideologies. I've lately met the father of a girl student and reached a decision to
give her private tuition at home. We think people who seek private home tuition have a good living standard and
that their children must be very weak in academics. On the contrary, the student I‟ve been teaching is a very good
learner, and her parents are representative of a middle-class family.

The parent had a lot of trust in me and disclosed his income. Every month, he spends more than half his salary on
her school fees, home tuition fees and stationery for project work and assignments. Moreover, a thing to take
pride in is that he‟s been doing all this for his daughter. Nepal, as you all know very well, is a country where
gender discrimination is still deeply rooted. She‟s an only child, and the parents are no longer interested in
expanding their family.

Educating your daughter doesn't mean simply making her literate and stopping her from being humiliated by her
in-laws. Educating a daughter means empowering her and making her a complete human being. Recent
tendencies have demonstrated that married daughters are more responsible towards old parents than their
privileged sons. If daughters are well educated, they can be active members and self-dependent even after their
marriage. Therefore, they are quite likely to be a great help in need.

When we reached the place I got out of the car and walked around. There was no girl in sight. Some hundred meters away, a car with dark windows was parked on the other side of the road. On the nearby playground, some boys were playing cricket and a couple of cows were munching dried hay. I looked at my watch and started pacing up and down the road. I looked at the car and started walking again. The car started and sped away. I again consulted my watch. Ten minutes up: no sign of any girl. I walked to my car, got into it and said. ‘You see, I was right. There is no one here. The girl you chatted with on the Internet must have been a fake.” The next day, at lunchtime I retold the whole event to my colleague, Dhurva. ‘So you think that some bad guy was trying to approach your daughter?” He smiled. “Why are you laughing?” “Let me tell you why the girlfriend of your daughter didn’t appear at the meeting place. It was because her mother came with her in a car before you reached there. The mother was watching if there was really a boy of 13. But all she could see was an old man with a big stomach and a bald head lurking around the meeting place. So, she didn’t let her daughter get out of the car. She just drove the car back home.” “You mean…… You mean she saw me and ……..” I stammered.

A dystopia is defined as a community or society, usually fictional, which is in some important way undesirable or frightening. It’s the opposite of Utopia. A dystopian society may look perfect on the surface and trick you into thinking it is Utopia. Yet, here is something infinitely fascinating about the world as we know it crumbling and rising again. It gives hope and reminds us that humans have always prevailed; that we have a way of adapting to situations. Dystopian literature, while not a new concept, is a popular genre these days in your adult fiction for its imaginative social commentary. For me, the love of dystopian fiction started with the release of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Protagonist Katniss Everdeen lives in Panem, a nation divided into 12 districts. Each district has to serve the nation in areas like mining or irrigation. Panem’s headquarters is the Capitol, a highly advanced city with no poverty. The hunger game is an event held annually to entertain the nation, where a boy and a girl, aged between 12 and 18 from each district, are selected by a ‘lottery’ and forced to compete in a televised battle to death. Winning not only means that one among the 24 gets to stay alive, but it also secures food for everyone in his or her district for a year while the other districts struggle to survive on their limited food supply.

          A. answers these questions.

Can you imagine life without music? No soothing lullabies. No romantic serenades. No lively pop, hip-pop songs.
No stirring symphonies. No inspirational melodies. Most would consider that a dull and unappealing prospect.
Yes, music is a powerful bond that appeals to virtually the full range of human emotions. Not only does it
soothe, pacify, excite, entertain us but uplifts unites and inspires us. It moves us to ecstasy and reduces us to
tears. Moreover, music is so powerful that it speaks straight to our hearts. Why are we so moved by music that is
pleasant to our ears? The answer is this. Music is a beautiful invisible gift created by humans. As such, it should be treasured, and everyone, young and old, should have access to it. It has a very long history. For instance, archaeological evidence indicates that African people played the drums, horns and bells a long, long time ago. The ancient Chinese played a form of mouth organ and panpipes. The people of Egypt, India and Israel played the harp.
Of course, to enjoy instrumental music in the past, mankind had to play at least an instrument or listen to
someone who would play. Nowadays, a wide range of music is available to millions at the touch of a button or the
click of a mouse. Indeed, all forms of music have been recorded or downloaded to play on devices that can slip into
your pocket. A 2011 survey in a Western country found that eight to 18-year-olds spend more than four hours a
day listening to the music they like. This trend, which is not uncommon, helps explain why the music industry is flourishing. Music is big business. The kind of music people listen to varies as they grow older. It influences us. It affects our feelings. So it is believed that songs can be like the people we associate with. Some bring out our positive emotions, such as happiness and love. Others dredge up bad feelings, such as anger and hatred.

      a. Where did the culture of playing the drums begin?
      b. What else does music do in addition to entertain and excite?

27. Read the following passage and do the activities that follow.
All students are afraid of examinations as they are a stressful experience. But the examinations that I sat for last week were quite different. A week ago, I finished my Master’s first year examinations which were very terrible. The exam environment made me feel as if I was doing classwork in my classroom. The exam centre was in one of the old and well-reputed campuses in Kathmandu. Most of the examinees were mature people, and everyone carried their books, guides, solution papers, chits and mobiles into the exam hall. Moreover, no examinee was seated according to the assigned seating plan.

The exam results show that those who labour hard get lower marks and those who cram for the exams by making use of guess papers, solution papers, and guide books have been scoring higher marks. This practice has to be eliminated otherwise it will be a hindrance to educational progress.

I urge the concerned people to conduct examinations in a strict manner so that only hardworking and qualified candidates pass them. Otherwise, the overall education system of Nepal will worsen, and the number of students applying for higher studies abroad will swell rapidly. Many Nepali students do not want to earn a degree from Nepal’s universities. Unfortunately, our educationists and concerned authorities have been turning a blind eye to the malaise in the exam system. For instance, a couple of years ago there was an assessment system, so the maximum number of students got first division in the Master’s level. After the system was removed, very few students got first division.
There is injustice between the two generations. There is tough competition for jobs. First division certificate holders have a high possibility of getting jobs in comparison to second division holders. Our market is certificate oriented, not quality based. Employers look at the percentage. They lay emphasis on the percentage scored in the Master’s level, but they never consider how the employees have obtained the marks. There are many students who have been victimised by such a system of conducting examinations. Unless and until the examination system is made more stringent, qualified manpower cannot be produced.

         A. Give short answers to these questions.

         a. How do students cram for their examinations?
         b. How should exams be conducted according to the writer?
         c. Why did only a few students pass at the Master’s level?
         d. Who is likely to get jobs easily?
         e. What is focused on by the employers?

         B. Complete the following sentences with an appropriate word from the passage in each space.

        b. Most of the students don’t want to graduate from Nepal’s ______________.

        d. __________ prevails between two generations.

        C. Write the antonyms of these words from the passage.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

Socialization of the teenager is believed to be a difficult part in the modern society. On the one hand, modern
technology like the Internet has virtually linked the whole world. On the other hand, it has created physical gap
among people. Having considered the issue, in some countries school students are provided with an opportunity
to serve their community. In my opinion, sending school graduates to work in community services is a good idea
to minimize the physical gap between people as it equips them with valuable life skills.
As we know, life skills are very important to a person as they develop social, interpersonal, intellectual and
emotional skills. A person learns the way people communicate, negotiate, and cooperate to solve a common
problem in their community. Therefore, if a person is sent to a community for services, s/he learns practical ways
of dealing with social problems and their consequences. In addition, critical thinking and self-evaluation skills
can also be developed. Furthermore, working in the community helps people to develop good social skills.

       A. From the above poem, find the words that are opposite in meaning to the following words.

      a. bad b. ancient c. theoretical d. maximize

     B. Write whether the following statements are true or false.

     a. Teenagers can adjust themselves to the new society.
     b. Almost in all the countries, students are given a chance to serve their community.
     c. Life skills merely improve emotional aspects.

Mr Chairperson, language influences our thought and our thought influences reality of the world around us. It
means we perceive the world as per our linguistic background. Language also carries culture. Cultural and
linguistic diversity have a reciprocal relationship. Therefore there are obvious disadvantages of having only one
global language. Firstly, it would mean that all other languages would eventually disappear and, along with
them, their culture too. Each culture is unique with its own way of life and own perspective of the world. Cultural
diversity boosts tourism because it attracts tourists from different parts of the world. The loss of languages results
in the loss of cultures and the loss of cultures leads to the collapse of the tourism industry because there would be
no reason to travel for pleasure and interest if, all over the world, we have the same language and similar
cultures. This finally leads to decline of the national economy of the countries which rely on tourism industry.
Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to ask Karma if he could understand all the varieties, i.e. dialects of his
mother tongue. As we know, even the dialects are often unintelligible to all the speakers of the same language.
Then, how can we think about the use of a single language all over the world? Is it practical? Is it possible? I
think debating on such issue is just a waste of time. Thank you.

Mr Chairperson, respected teachers, and friends!

I would like to thank Mr. Timilsina for giving me an opportunity to express my opinion on the burning issue „the
fewer the languages there are, the easier the life will be‟. Every year, several languages die out. Some people
think that life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world. I support this view.

As we know, the development of recent technology has a significant role to create a global village. People from
any part of the world can communicate easily through the Internet. Due to the international importance of the
English language, most people are reluctant to use their first language and are learning English. This shows that
people prefer learning the language that helps them to communicate in the global village to their own language.

Mr Chairperson, using the same language would certainly aid understanding and global fraternity. People can
communicate with each other without any problems. It unites all the people as global citizens. It would promote
learning, the flow of information and ideas. For example, students don‟t have to translate the text into their
mother tongue to understand.

Dear Ms Jones,
I'm writing this reference letter at the request of Katie Kingston, who is applying for the Student Volunteer Program
at St. Francis Hospital this summer.

I have known Katie for two years in my capacity as a teacher at Smithtown Middle School. Katie took English and
Spanish from me and earned superior grades in those classes. Based on Katie's grades, attendance and class
participation, I'd rate Katie's academic performance in my class as superior. Katie has a number of strengths to
offer an employer. Katie is always interested in supporting others. For example, this year when we worked on our
class community service project, Katie was helpful to me in collecting and organizing the food for the food pantry
here in Smithtown.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend Katie Kingston. If her performance in my class is any indication of how
she'd perform in your position, Katie will be a positive addition to your organization. If you should ever need any
additional information you can feel free to contact me at 555-5555 or by email at susan2000@gmail.com
anytime.

This morning the city of Paris looks slightly fuming; the sky is overcast, and it is drizzling too But it does no harm to me. I have decided to go out for a visit or an observation tour. I had asked Nirmal bhaai for a list of museums in the vicinity of Paris yesterday. He brought me some brochures with the names and addresses, and street maps of Paris Museums in the evening. Paris has more museums than temples and gods in Kathmandu, he says. I am new to Paris, saying here for only one week. Hope these maps and brochures will show me Paris metro zones and guide me to some museums today last week Nirmal bhaai showed me Pompidou Centre, ‘a complex building of high-tech structure’. This visit has emboldened me to explore further.
I guess I can cover a maximum of two museums today. It means just giving cursory glance. This is my plan. They say Cezanne is quite far away, Paul Cezanne, the post-impressionist painter, may be in the outskirts. I cannot visit him all alone, and cannot cover two museums in a day. So I chose to visit a museum nearby in the heart of the city. Likewise, Braque is far, Du Champ is farther away. So I have decided as per Nirmal’s suggestion to start with Rodin’s. Maybe I will go to Monet’s next.
